One of the most commonly asked questions about the company is: “why the name Olive Devices?” I even remember asking Renee, the founder of the company that same question during my job interview. The answer is pretty interesting, so I thought I would share. When Renee was founding the company in her senior year of college, she found an opportunity to help the hearing world and the deaf and hard of hearing world communicate more easily.

The olive branch has been used as a symbol for peace and connections between people for thousands of years. It started in ancient Greek mythology, and became a very common symbol for peace in the Roman times. No one is sure why this came to be, but one theory is that olive trees take a very long time to grow. This meant that farmers would not grow them during times of war. If olive trees were being grown, then that meant there was peace and people thought it would last for a long enough time to grow the trees to maturity. Regardless of the origins of the symbol, its relationship to peace and connection has lasted to this day

This makes it a great metaphor for what we are trying to do at Olive Devices. The main goal of the company is to use technology to extend a helping hand and connect people. This includes people who speak different languages and have different hearing levels. You might even say that we are extending an olive branch between different groups of people. The important meaning - extend a helping hand to others - behind our name was an opportunity to put our mission to work and thus Olive Devices was created.

Sincerely,
