As we enter the whirlwind of the holiday season it’s hard to miss the bombardment of deals, shopping, and consumerism that it brings. But what if there was a way to reconnect with the deeper feelings of the holiday season such as love and kindness towards our fellow humans? Well now there’s a new way to do that. We have Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and … Giving Tuesday?!?!

Created in 2012 by the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact and the 92nd Street Y, #GivingTuesday is a way to kick off the holiday season of giving. #GivingTuesday isn’t a specific idea or event. It’s a movement and a platform to encourage people to donate and kick off a charitable holiday season. There are a number of affiliated local organizations all over the the U.S. and the world that participate in #GivingTuesday.

For example, here in Philadelphia there are over 279 organizations participating in #GivingTuesday. One such organization is ACCT Philly, a animal care and control provider has found a donor who will match all donations to their Stella Fund for injured animals up to $10,000. Another great example of organizations participating in #GivingTuesday is that Comcast and the National Philanthropic Trust will give a $1,000 grant to a selected Philadelphia nonprofit.

However, #GivingTuesday is not just about organizations, it's about individuals like you and me, and there are a lot of ways we can participate. Some individual ways to give include volunteering, donating, pro bono work, and payroll giving.

#GivingTuesday is a lovely way to counter the sometimes overwhelming consumerism of the holiday season. Thanksgiving just went by, and every year it’s a great reminder of just how lucky we are. If it made you think about those who are less fortunate, then perhaps we can all chip in this #GivingTuesday to truly embrace the holiday spirit. Now that we have a great resource at our disposal, we have no excuse not to!
