For many, family comes first. But with the need to constantly adjust to the ever-quickening pace of the modern world, it’s not always easy to find time. It’s so important for parents to provide for their kids, but how can they always maintain this without letting family time fall by the wayside?

The ThirdPath Institute has a solution. Founded by Jessica DeGroot, this Philadelphia organization is finding new ways to integrate work and life to create family time. Through blogs, webinars, pioneers, and groups, ThirdPath has created a chance for parents to balance work and family to preserve and strengthen relationships.

“The way we can do work has changed in the past 20+ years," DeGroot said. "The way we do family has also changed during this same period of time. ThirdPath Institute saw this as an opportunity. And our work with progressive men, women and leaders has really proven there is a new and better way to approach both work and family.”

There many ways ThirdPath provides opportunity to improve family life. Pioneers are spotlighted, giving readers the chance to see how they have redesigned work to make more time for life. The Across the Life Cycle blog contains interviews with authors who have also written about managing work, family, and free time in the contemporary world and includes articles with advice on topics like elder care, vacation, and summertime. Every second Thursday of the month, ThirdPath also hosts free webinars that are available to everyone at 1pm ET.

“The world is ripe for change," DeGroot said. "Millennials want to do work differently AND do family differently. Baby boomers are redefining retirement. They don't want to drop out of the workforce.  People with children and aging parents are also passionate about our mission. So we've been very successful at learning from all these different people, and then sharing what we've learned with others.”

ThirdPath keeps in mind its long term goal, which is to organize individuals, families and communities to influence larger systemic change. What can be more important to us than our family’s well-being? ThirdPath understands that many of today’s challenges (the growing income gap, decreased job security, greater time spent working, and cuts in public support systems) can be solved by providing workable solutions for the family first.

“With over fifteen years of experience and expertise to draw from, I love being able to help people put these ideas into practice," DeGroot said. "Yes, we need more supportive public policy and more supportive organizations, but right now, I love being able to help people follow this ‘third path’ - an integrated approach to work and life - starting today!”
